Ten miles is not the same journey everywhere. Around Cramlington, Blyth, Ashington and Morpeth, that distance can include several populated areas and a reasonable number of places to meet. In rural west or north Northumberland, the same radius may contain scattered villages, limited evening transport and very few convenient meeting points.
Start with a simple question: how far would I travel on an ordinary weekday? Not for a wonderful third date on a sunny Saturday. For a coffee after work when it is dark, raining and both of you need to be up in the morning.
That answer gives you a useful first search area. Then consider the route:
- If you drive: think about actual road time, parking and whether a winter journey still feels reasonable.
- If you use public transport: check the last return service, not just the outward journey.
- If you work away from home: include places already on your route rather than drawing a perfect circle around your postcode.
- If caring responsibilities limit your time: keep the first search tighter. Reliability may matter more than a larger choice.
The county needs different approaches in different places. The south-eastern belt has the densest population, so people there can usually begin with a narrower area. Around Hexham, Corbridge and the Tyne Valley, east-to-west travel may be more practical than a shorter cross-country route. Alnwick can draw from surrounding villages and the coastal corridor, although transport becomes the catch. Berwick is nearer Edinburgh than Newcastle, a useful reminder that county lines do not always match real social geography.
The best distance setting is not the largest one you can tolerate. It is the area within which meeting again would feel normal.
If a first search produces few suitable profiles, widen it in stages. Change one setting at a time, perhaps adding five or ten miles or relaxing a non-essential preference. This tells you what is actually limiting the results. Opening every filter at once may create a busy screen, but it does not necessarily create a practical dating pool.
